In May of 1971, Dan & Steff Leidecker introduced garbage pick-up service to northern Whatcom County.

Beginning with just 17 customers, today Dan & Steff's Nooksack Valley Disposal & Recycling services over 8,000 county customers including the cities of Lynden, Everson, Nooksack, and Sumas.

A word about Nooksack Valley Disposal: Nooksack Valley Disposal and Recycling Company has been serving Lynden, Everson, Nooksack, and Sumas since 1971. Under the leadership of Dan Leidecker, garbage and recycling service have been what Nooksack Valley Disposal does best. The Nooksack Valley Disposal team has led northern Whatcom County into a new age of recycling and garbage service by making recycling easier than ever before. NVD (short for Nooksack Valley Disposal) has led the way for people in northern Whatcom County to toss their garbage with the satisfaction that their collection time will be consistent and, more importantly, will not go into any Whatcom County landfills. That's because Dan Leidecker has teamed with other Washington state garbage haulers to locate waste facilities that recycle the household garbage you and I throw away every day. Rather than putting that garbage into a large landfill, it is separated. Those items that are recyclable are recycled until all that is left is contaminated waste. That waste is then sent by railroad car to Eastern Washington or Oregon. The east-side of the Cascade Mountains is ideal for long-term garbage containment because of the climate and the impermeable layer of clay deep within the earth. Together, the dry weather and deep clay make an ideal barrier against ground water contamination.
